Emelia's Cake Smash
I am nothing if not a sucker for a good creative theme. So needless to say, I was pumped to put together a koala themed birthday set! Her outfit was lovingly handmade by her nana and the cute little Koala ears atop her sweet noggin was the perfect accessory to complete the look.
Usually kids can be a bit shy in front of the camera - that's so totally normal- so I just bust out some neutral fun little toys so we can play and get comfortable. Emmie, however, has been on the other end of my lense so many times she's basically a pro at this point.
I always love starting with portrait photos of babe before we get into the cake portion of their session. It gives them time to really warm up to me and is a great way to get some clean photos of your newly one-year-old! Often time we have a different backdrop for these to give a lot of variety but with Emmie we kept the same set-up throughout and just changed the props.
The basket and flower crown were actually a super sweet call back to her newborn photos.
One of my favorite things about doing cake smash sessions is just simply seeing their reactions to their cake! I could do a whole day filled with nothing but these sessions, and each one would have a uniquely funny or sweet reaction. Seriously, cake smash sessions are just so fun.
In Emmies case, she LOVED her cake, smashing completely into it. Hands, feet, wooden spoon.. what didn't she use?! By the time she was done, I don't think you could really call what was left a cake. It was more like a crumbly mess with some smeared icing hidden somewhere within.
