If you’ve ever tried to decide between booking a mini session or a full photo session, you’re not alone. I get this question often, and I totally get why—it can feel overwhelming! Both options are beautiful in their own way, but depending on your goals, your family dynamic, and especially the age of your little ones, one may be a better fit than the other.
Let’s break it down in a simple way so you can make the choice that’s right for your family.
If your kiddo is under 7 or 8 and it’s their first time in front of the camera, I really recommend going with a full session. Little ones need some time to settle in—they’re taking in a new space, a new person (hi, that’s me!), and this big camera in their face. It’s a lot!
A quick mini session can feel a little too fast for kids who need a minute to warm up. And when they’re not totally comfortable yet, it can make the whole experience feel a bit rushed or overwhelming—for them and for you.
That said, you know your child best. If your little one is already used to having their photo taken professionally and tends to warm up quickly, a mini session might be just right for your family. Some kids are total naturals and jump right in with big smiles—and in that case, we can absolutely make magic in a short amount of time!
With a full session, though, we have the space to go at their pace. We can stop for a snack, run around, snuggle, or just let them explore. Once they’re relaxed and having fun, that’s when those real, joyful moments start to shine—and that’s what I’m always aiming to capture.
Not All “Mini” Sessions Are True Minis
This is especially important when it comes to newborn, milestone, and cake smash sessions. While I do offer smaller, more simplified versions of these, they aren’t what I consider a “true” mini session—and here’s why.
These sessions celebrate major moments in your baby’s life, and they really do need a little extra time and care. A newborn session, for example, isn’t just about snapping a few cute photos. We need time for feeding, soothing, and safely posing your baby—and that can’t be rushed. Babies take the lead, and we go at their pace.
The same goes for milestone sessions (like when baby is sitting or standing) and cake smashes. Your little one needs time to warm up, get comfortable, and explore. Those sweet, personality-filled moments happen when we give them the space to just be themselves.
So yes, I do offer shorter options for these session types, but they’re not mini sessions in the traditional sense. I never want to rush through something so special. These are once-in-a-lifetime memories, and they deserve to be captured thoughtfully.
So, What’s the Difference?
Here’s a quick breakdown of what you can expect with each type of session:
Mini Sessions
- Short and sweet (typically 15-20 minutes)
- Offered on specific dates and locations
- Great for holiday cards, quick updates, or returning clients with kids who are already comfortable with me
- Limited time = limited variety (think 1 outfit, 1 location, a handful of poses)
Full Sessions
- Up to an hour (sometimes more for newborns or special milestone sessions)
- Fully personalized to your family and your story
- Flexible timing to allow for breaks, snacks, cuddles, and play
- More variety in locations, outfits, and moments captured
- Perfect for first-timers, young children, and anyone wanting a more relaxed experience
