Why Newborn Sessions Take 2–4 Hours (And Why That’s a Good Thing)

If you’re getting ready for your newborn session and wondering why it takes a couple of hours—sometimes even up to four—you’re definitely not alone. I get this question all the time, especially from new parents who are already balancing a lot in those early days.

The truth is, there’s a very good reason newborn sessions take their time. These sessions are designed to be calm, baby-led, and completely unhurried. My goal is always to create a peaceful space where you and your baby feel comfortable—and that takes a little time. Here’s why:

Your Baby Sets the Pace

Newborns don’t run on a schedule, and that’s perfectly okay. Whether they need to eat, be rocked, or have a little snuggle break—we pause for it all. Some babies breeze through their session, others need a bit more time and comfort. I always follow your baby’s cues so we can keep things relaxed and stress-free.

Soothing and Settling Takes Time

Those sweet, sleepy poses you see in my portfolio don’t happen instantly. It can take a while for your baby to settle into that deep, cozy sleep where we can gently move them into position. Sometimes we’ll spend 20–30 minutes just soothing—this is totally normal, and I plan for it.

Safe, Gentle Posing Is My Priority

Posing a newborn is a delicate process. Every move is slow, supportive, and safe. I never rush this part, because your baby’s comfort always comes first. Some poses take a little more time to set up, especially if baby’s feeling wiggly or curious (which is adorable—and also very normal).

Breaks Are Welcome—and Expected

Diaper changes? Feedings? Fussiness? All part of the process. I build extra time into every session to make room for these things so that no one feels rushed. You can feed, cuddle, or just take a break when you or baby needs it.

Every Baby Is Unique

There’s no one-size-fits-all approach to newborn photography. Some babies love to be swaddled, others prefer to stretch. Some drift right to sleep, others are wide-eyed for a while. That’s the beauty of these sessions—we get to follow your little one’s lead and capture them just as they are.

A Few Tips to Help Things Go Smoothly

You don’t have to do much to prepare, but here are a few things that can help:

  • Try to keep baby awake for about an hour before your session if you can.
  • Feed them right before or as soon as you arrive.
  • Bring along extra diapers, a pacifier (if you’re using one), and a change of clothes for baby (and maybe yourself).
  • Dress in layers—my studio is kept warm and cozy for baby’s comfort.

These Moments Are Worth the Time

Newborn sessions aren’t just about photos—they’re about capturing this incredibly special (and fleeting) chapter in your family’s story. When you look back at these images, I want you to remember how small your baby felt in your arms, the way their lashes curled, the tiny toes you couldn’t stop kissing.

Taking our time means you get images that are full of love, connection, and calm.

If you have any questions or want to chat about what to expect, I’m always here. You and your baby deserve a beautiful, relaxed experience—and I can’t wait to capture it for you.
